Hanks is an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was the child of Janet Marylyn, a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks (an itinerant chef). His mother's family, originally called "Fraga" was completely Portuguese and his father was mostly of English descent. Tom was born into the context of a "fractured family". He didn't have any acting experience in college. This was what helped him get started in his career. He auditioned downtown to be cast in a play at the theater for community members. The director offered him a trip to Cleveland and that was where his acting career began.
